Joseph Ryder had been playing for Newcastle West End and he joined East End in the summer of 1892 following the demise of their rivals. His brother, Isaac, made the same journey.
He spent his first season in the Northern Alliance, but broke his collar-bone in two places in a Northern Alliance match at Willington Athletic. A benefit match was arranged for him against the same team in April.
When Andrew Ramsay left after the first game of the 1893/94 season, due to the club’s wage reduction policy, Joseph was called up for his debut against the Swifts. However United had already engaged Trafalgar goalkeeper Lowrey so he knew he would be immediately replaced.
And his only other appearance in the first team was almost exactly a year later against the same opponent. He conceded thrice in both games.
He moved to Hebburn Argyle for the 1895/96 season before returning to St. James’ for a second spell.
