Chris Guthrie was Ron Guthrie’s younger brother and one of the most sought after young players in the North East, representing England at schoolboy level. He attracted the interest of a host of clubs.

A regular scorer for the juniors and reserves he was capable of operating as an attacker or midfielder. Chris was tall and strong and reckoned to have the second hardest shot at the club after Malcolm Macdonald.

He played all his four first team games in 1971/72, the first three in midfield and the final one as a striker.

Initially turned down a move to Southend in October 972 as he didn’t want to move that far South, but after Chesterfield also made an offer he changed his mind and left for Roots Hall.
