Richard Dinnis signed John Blackley from Hibernians in October of the disastrous relegation season of 1977/78. He had made over 400 appearances for the Edinburgh side since joining as a junior in 1965 and had 7 Scottish caps to his name.
Although Hibs fans were very unhappy the deal suited all parties. John got the “financial security” that he was after and Hibernians received a much-needed cash injection as they were struggling financially due to falling gates.
A delighted Dinnis proclaimed that: "I promised our supporters quality and that is what I'm giving them". Blackley said he was not worried about Newcastle's League position and believed things could “only get better".
A cultured left-half or sweeper John was an excellent reader of the game, skilful and calmness personified. The supporters certainly appreciated his talents and he was voted Player of the Year.
Unfortunately John was dogged by a lot of minor injuries during his two years on Tyneside and as a result his form suffered somewhat during the following campaign.
He was also one of a number of players who fell out with Bill McGarry and he was given a free transfer. He signed for Preston in May 1979 although his Newcastle contract did not officially run out until the 31st July.
John joined Hibernians from from junior side Gairdoch United in 1965 and stayed at Easter Road for 12 seasons where he was a mainstay of their successful side of the early seventies.
A catalogue of minor injuries prevented him from having an extended run in the side, but he was still clearly a class player and helped fill the void created by Nulty’s injury.
Blackley had another decent campaign although he was once more dogged by injuries which impacted his form. He also filled in at left-back towards the end of the season.
John spent a couple of years at Preston and then returned to Scotland to play for Hamilton before ending up back at Hibernians in the 1983/84 season.
