Scorers: Nattrass, Gowling

ee/08 - ASC: Sheff United 0 Newcastle 1 (0-1)

Sheff United - Bramall Lane - 7,993

Scorers: Gowling

Gowling's ninth minute goal is a rare moment of quality in a dour, lifeless game.

10/08 - ASC: Hull 0 Newcastle 0

Hull - Boothferry Park - 4,715

Scorers:

Jones, Blackhall, Nattrass (Kennedy), Cassidy, Keeley, Howard, Barrowclough, Oates, Tudor, Hudson, Craig.

Really poor game

14/08 - ASC: Newcastle 3 Middlesbrough 0 (2-0)

Middlesbrough - SJP - 15,703

Scorers: Gowling 2, Barrowclough

Hudson replaces the injured Cassidy. Charlton's men enjoy the majority of the possession, but lack finish.

21/08 - D1: Newcastle 2 Derby 2 (1-1)

Derby - SJP - 35,927 -

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Hudson, Bird, Nulty, Barrowclough, Oates, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Scorers: Hudson, Craig T (p) - Nish, George

Position:

An injury to Cassidy gives Ray Hudson an opportunity. Derby finished fourth last season and it is an entertaining and eventually fractious game. Although Derby are certainly superior in class and skill, United battle bravely. Charlie George and Bird trade punches and after consulting the linesman it is the County man who gets the early bath. And as the players leave the field Derby's Leighton James is lectured for his "colourful" language by a finger wagging policeman who has him pinned up against the tunnel wall.

25/08 - D1: Tottenham 0 Newcastle 2 (0-0)

Tottenham - White Hart Lane - 24,022

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Hudson, Bird, Nulty, Barrowclough, Oates, Burns (Blackhall), Gowling, Craig T

Scorers: Burns, Barrowclough

Position: 6th

Lee selects the same eleven, but United adopt a defensive approach before scoring twice in the last seventeen minutes. Their performance does not go down well with Fleet Street with one reporter accusing them of being "unimaginative and boring". The media criticism incenses the United players who regard it as a professional performance well carried out. Lee is not making any apologies for United's new dour style either. "I'm sick of losing 5-4 and being told what a great game it was....I thought it was a performance of perfection".

28/08 - D1: Newcastle 0 Bristol C 0 (0-0)

Bristol C - SJP - 31,775

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Hudson, Bird, Nulty, Barrowclough, Oates, Cannell, Tudor, Craig T (Howard)

Position: 3rd

Injuries to Burns and Gowling result in a a recall for John Tudor, playing his first senior game for 8 months, against newly promoted Bristol City. There is also a first start for Paul Cannell who has received clearance to play again after guesting in the States during the summer. It is a dire game of precious few chances played in difficult, windy conditions; although the crowd are in no mood for excuses and their feelings are expressed loudly and clearly. When Pat Howard is brought on for Tommy Craig the crowd are not happy as they believe it is a typical defensive tactical decision by Lee, but it turns out the scotsman was injured. However, the main target for the fans' abuse is Graham Oates leading to Lee complaining: "It's extremely hard on a player who has made only a couple of appearances at home. I think they should give him a chance".

01/09 - LC R2: Gillingham 1 Newcastle 2 (0-1)

Gillingham - Priestfield Stadium - 11,203

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Hudson (McCaffery), Bird, Nulty, Barrowclough, Oates, Cannell, Guy, Cassidy

Scorers: Cannell, Cassidy - Weatherley

With Burns, Tommy Craig and Gowling all unavailable United are forced to field a very inexperienced forward line in Paul Cannell and debutant Alan Guy. Cannell gives United an early lead and they look comfortable in the first period. After the break the Gills equalise and although United hit back within five minutes they give them a much tougher time.

04/09 - D1: Middlesbrough 1 Newcastle 0 (0-0)

Middlesbrough - Ayresome Park - 26,000

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Hudson, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cassidy, Burns, Gowling, Craig T (Cannell)

Scorers: Mills

Position: 10th

David Mills scores six minutes from time to give Jackie Charlton his first derby victory. What little positive football is on show generally comes from the home side with the Magpies content to retain possession. It is a tough match and three players are booked, but the real villain in United's eyes, Graeme Souness, escapes scot free. Richard Dinnis accuses him of going "over the top" in a challenge that results in Tommy Craig limping off. Brandishing a shin pad with a two inch hole he demands that Souness should be banned. After the game Tommy Craig also blasts Souness, claiming he could have broken his leg. Despite the precaution of an all-ticket crowd, trouble breaks out due to some United fans infiltrating the Boro enclosure.

11/09 - D1: Newcastle 2 Man U 2 (1-2)

Man U - SJP - 39,037

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Scorers: Burns, Cannell - Greenhoff, Pearson

Position: 9th

The visit of the Red Devils is another all-ticket affair and atrocious weather conditions lead to a remarkable 10,000 ticket holding fans (mostly from Lancashire) not turning up. Despite the gale force winds and driving rain both sets of players put on a decent show for the sodden crowd.

15/09 - AS R2 L1 - Ayr United 3 Newcastle 0 (2-0)

Ayr United - 3,600

Gordon Lee risks the wrath of the footballing supremos by sending a virtual reserve team to Scotland for the Anglo Scottish Cup game in Scotland. Lee also makes the journey to look at some of his fringe players, but cannot have been impressed as they are well beaten with only the retired Iam McFaul putting in any sort of performance.

18/09 - D1: Leeds 2 Newcastle 2 (0-0)

Leeds - Elland Road - 35,098

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Oates, Craig T

Scorers: Cannell, Cassidy - McNiven, Harris

Position: 10th

Although they are twice behind, United are very unlucky to come away with only a point after cutting Leeds to shreds in a brilliant second half display. "We showed Leeds how to play football", crows Lee. "It was controlled football, the sort I like and have preached since I arrived at Newcastle". The four thousand travelling fans are equally impressed.

22/09 - LC R3 - Newcastle 3 Stoke 0 (2-0)

Stoke - SJP - 27,143

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy (Craig D), McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Oates, Craig T

Scorers: Nattrass, Craig T (p), Burns

Only a fine performance from England keeper Peter Shilton prevents a thrashing as United turn the screw.

25/09 - D1: Newcastle 1 Liverpool 0 (1-0)

Liverpool - SJP - 34,813

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Craig D (Blackhall), McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Oates, Craig T

Scorers: Cannell

Position: 8th

A tremendous victory over the current Champions who are once again leading the way after five wins in six. The rain is lashing down, but serves to inspire rather than dampen United's enthusiasm. The Magpies dominate the game with Liverpool only really getting a look-in during the first ten and last ten minutes. They play a controlled passing game injected with pace and thrust when it matters. With Lee away scouting it is Dinnis who takes control and enthuses: "The team does the talking for itself; they played magnificently". Alan Kenneddy offers his perspective: "We're a team now, we play like a team" whilst also hitting out at Lee's critics. The only goal of the match comes five minutes before the break, a diving header from Cannell; "I've told the doubters I can do it in the best company, now I hope I've proved it."

02/10 - D1: Norwich 3 Newcastle 2 (3-0)

Norwich - Carrow Road - 21,417

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Scorers: Craig T (p), Gowling - Peters (2 - 1 pen) Busby

Position: 13th

A week after beating the leaders, United lose to the bottom side. Newcastle are a shambles in the first period and are three goals down with just over half an hour gone. They are transformed after the break, but only score twice. Norwich manager John Bond is full of praise for Newcastle who he says are a "credit to the game"; but Lee is more concerned with the poor first half defensive display. United's fans did not leave such a good impression as they go on the rampage in Norfolk.

06/10 - D1: Newcastle 2 West Bromwich 0 (1-0)

West Bromwich - SJP - 28,746

Mahoney, Nattrass (Oates), Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Hibernian - SJP - 28,746

16/10 - D1: Coventry 1 Newcastle 1 (0-0)

23/10 - D1: Newcastle 3 Birmingham 2 (1-1)

Birmingham - SJP - 31,711

Scorers: Burns (2), Craig T - Gallagher, Francis (p)

Position: 5th

When Trevor Francis converts a penalty to put Birmingham 2-1 early in the second period it looks as though United could be facing defeat at SJP for the first time this season. The crowd might have reacted badly in the past but on this occasion they get behind the team and get their reward as United fight back to win. Lee is full of praise; "The fans were fabulous, it's obvious they appreciate what we are trying to do and the lads were thrilled to bits with the encouragement they got".

27/10 - LC R4: Man U 7 Newcastle 2 (3-1)

Man U - Old Trafford - 52,002

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling (Blackhall), Craig T

Scorers: Burns, Nattrass - Hill (3), Houston, Pearson, Nicholl, Coppell

30/10 - D1: Newcastle 1 Stoke 0 (0-0)

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Guy, Craig T

Stoke - SJP - 32,339

Scorers: Cannell

Position: 5th

John Tudor makes an early return to Tyneside with his loan move having been made permanent. Shell-shocked Mahoney is generously supported by the United faithful and after the match he is delighted. "It made all the difference in the world to me. No one could fail to respond to people like that". In the end an awful match is settled by a rare clanger from Mahoney's opposite number, England keeper Peter Shilton.

06/11 - D1: Man C 0 Newcastle 0 (0-0)

Man C (4th) - Maine Road - 40,049

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Position:

United return to Manchester (albeit the blue half) determined to make amends for their humiliating defeat at Old Trafford ten days ago and they achieve their goal with a thoroughly professional performance.

20/11 - D1: West Ham 1 Newcastle 2 (1-2)

West Ham - Upton Park - 21,324

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Scorers: Burns, Nulty - Robson B

Position: 5th

Another capital victory as United's cool professionalism overcomes the struggling Hammers pacy desperation. "I'm not going to crow", says Lee, "but joint second-top (5th) with one-third of the season gone can't be bad. I've preached all along that what we need is consistency and that is what we achieved today".

24/11 - D1: Newcastle 4 Everton 1 (1-0)

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy (Craig D); Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Everton - SJP - 31,203

Scorers: Gowling (2), Craig T, Cannell - Lyons

Position: 3rd

Newcastle move up into third place after Everton are thrashed in a performance far removed from the "dull and workmanlike" early season shows. It could have been more if Gowling hadn't missed two sitters.

27/11 - D1: Newcastle 2 QPR 0 (2-0)

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

QPR - SJP - 39,045

Scorers: Burns, Cannell

Position: 3rd

The renewed faith of the supporters is reflected in the highest turnout of the season so far against a QPR side who are struggling to live up to their form of last season, when they finished runners-up. United retain third spot behind Liverpool and Ipswich and are now regarded as genuine title challengers. QPR manager Dave Sexton becomes the latest manager to praise Lee's new-look side. "They are a much better side than last season. Their team work is high and they have a lot of skill".

04/12 - D1: Arsenal 5 Newcastle 3 (3-1)

Arsenal - Highbury - 35,000

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Position: 3rd

After going eight matches unbeaten and having won five of their last six it is a confident United side that travel to a frozen Highbury to take on Arsenal and a certain Supermac in front of the MoD cameras. The match, played in treacherous conditions, is a bit of a classic and for Macdonald, who scores a hat-trick, hits the bar and lays on another it is a personal triumph. "It was most satisfying scoring three against them" he says.

11/12 - D1: Newcastle 1 Ipswich 0 (aban 45m)

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Sunderland - SJP - 49,664

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Scorers: Cannell, Kennedy

Position: 5th

Almost 50,000 fans turn up for the Tyne Wear derby against bottom-placed Sunderland and on this occasion the form book stays firmly upright. Playing with no confidence and little fight the visitors are completely dominated by their hosts and the only surprise is that it takes the Magpies so long to gain a numerical advantage. Cannell scores four minutes before the break and Kennedy doubles the advantage just before the end prompting a mass exodus of the 10,000 Wearsiders.

Man C - SJP - 45,300

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Craig D, McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Cassidy

Scorers: Gowling - Craig (og), Royle, Owen

Gordon Lee's pre match motivational talk revolves around telling the players he is off to Goodison to take over as manager of Everton. Therefore it is no surprise that they are dumped out of the Cup by the third-placed Citizens.

The weather is as bitter as the mood and the pitch is more suited to penguins than footballers. With media reports suggesting Lee is off, some in the crowd sing "We love you Gordon", "Everton Hands Off" and "Westwood Out". "Auld Lang Syne" also gets an airing. United start the brighter and then midway through the first half the referee disallows a goal by the visitors. Fighting fans spill onto the pitch side and the referee decides to take the players off whilst the police restore order. The break seems to disrupt United and City gradually take control. After the match Lee argues that the match should have been called off, but accepts that the conditions were the same for both sides.

Position: 4th

The Good Friday clash is vital for both sides as Sunderland are trying desperately to pull away from the relegation zone. The first half is a dismal affair with United content to sit back and break up the Wearsiders play; it isn’t long before the crowd are bemoaning the "waste of money". But just before the break youngster Kevin Arnott fires the Wearsiders ahead. Roared on by the home crowd Sunderland score a second through Lee and almost grab a third. But their confidence is fragile and when Cannell smacks in a loose ball with ten minutes left it is game on. Six minutes later the crowd are incensed as Tommy Craig drives in from a free kick whilst the Sunderland players are still organising their wall.

Position: 4th

Before the match Dinnis makes it very clear that in away games he intends to put up the shutters. QPR are unbeaten for six months at Loftus Road and when Givens scores after only four minutes it looks as though United's unbeaten run, stretching to ten games, might be over. But United slowly begin to take control and bounce back to win. The Magpies are now only three points behind leaders Liverpool and six points ahead of Aston Villa in 5th.

30/04 - D1: Newcastle 0 Arsenal 2 (0-1)

Arsenal - SJP - 44,677

Mahoney, Nattrass, Kennedy, Cassidy (Blackhall), McCaffery, Nulty, Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, Craig T

Scorers: Cannell (2), Oates - Little (2)

Position: 4th

League Cup winners and top scorers Villa arrive on Tyneside one point and one place behind the Magpies, but with two games in hand. It is a classic match which starts in pulsating fashion. With only 50 seconds on the clock Brian Little puts Villa ahead, but three goals in nineteen minutes secures United a 3-1 lead at half-time. The Midlanders fight back, creating numerous chances and Little scores his second sixteen minutes from time. But United hang on for the victory which guarantees a UEFA Cup slot.
